The Name

A new spotting scope, the Victory Harpia 95, was launched by Zeiss recently. With Zeiss, you are told by the “Victory” product name that this is their highest optical quality standard. We were naturally excited about the opportunity, wondering what we will get to play with it. This sort of thing happens all the time, but it is not a very regular occurrence simultaneously. On the one side, several optics manufacturers are out there, innovating and introducing new products to the market, so it happens all the time. On the other hand, this is Zeiss, arguably one of the world’s best optics manufacturers, so in practice, it’s not all that usual to see the scale of this quality appearing on the market. Zeiss Victory Harpia scopes come in two objective lens sizes, at 85 and 95 mm in diameter. Today we are going to analyze the 99 mm.

Dimensions

The first thing you need to know is that this is a beast with a scope! The scope is heavy at 95 mm of high-quality, high-density glass, even before installing the metal frame and rubber armor. With the objective lens cap on, we weighed the scope, and it hit 5 lbs., 2.4 oz (2.3 kg). Per Zeiss, it weighs around 4.7 lbs in the 85-mm version. (kg 2.1). That instantly tells you one thing: to use this lens, you would need a full-size tripod because tripod weight is needed to safely counter-balance the optic, or you are constantly at risk of knocking it over. You would want to go for a carbon-fiber tripod at the same time- no sense to add any more weight than you need to the complete kit you will bring in the field. From the lens hood to the zoom eyepiece’s far tip, the scope is 17.75 inches (45.1 cm) long and 4.25 inches (10.8 cm) wide at the widest part of the lens hood. The rubber armoring on the prism housing is entirely matt black except for the tiny blue and white Zeiss logo. There is an inherent lens hood over the objective lens that slips out. We strongly advocate getting in the habit of using it. Not only can the hood boost the quality of the view by lowering the flare, but if anyone knocks it over, it can also shield the scope.

Eyepiece

By not overburdening them with options, Zeiss made it easy on prospective Harpia scope buyers. We can only access Harpia scopes in angled configurations. Also, for these scopes, there is only one ocular available: the Victory Harpia eyepiece. This eyepiece has a helically adjustable eyecup (“twist-up”) to provide users with various eye relief. It is purposefully stable, so it resists the loss of intermediate positions. For superb chromatic aberration reduction (we never saw ANY in the field) as well as excellent light transmission, the lens system is made entirely from fluorite glass. The nearest distance to concentrate was 14.7 feet (4.5 meters). This seems like an odd property to mention on a scope because seeing much better items is the whole point of scopes! We admit that having a handle on an optics product is one of the things you calculate.

Focusing

The Zeiss Victory Harpia scope, like their Conquest Gavia scope line, has a single, collet-type, dual-speed focus ring mechanism. There are several words here. In this case, it means that focusing is achieved with a ring that covers the body of the scope and that the mechanism has two “gears”: a fine focus and a coarse focus, combined in one ring. In the sector, the mechanism takes a little getting used to. The way it works is that the ring’s initial motion is still in fine-focus mode; you must turn the ring harder to get to the course focus. We spent days blowing right past our desired focal plane and making our way back! But with this mechanism, when we got used to it, it was easy to achieve exquisitely fair and rapid concentration. This made the dual-knob tool of other scopes feel a little kludgy.
